हद हो गई, जीवन कितनी शांति से मस्त चल रहा था, अचानक ही बेन ने मुझे टैग कर दिया!! चलो अब कर दिया तो कर दिया, निपट लेते हैं!! 😉
वैसे पिछली बार अल्का जी ने मुझे खूब फ़ंसाया था टैग कर, लेकिन इस बार मामला थोड़ा आसान है!! 😉 इस बार सिर्फ़ अपने बारे में पाँच ऐसी बातें बतानी हैं जो आमतौर पर अन्य लोगों(यानि कि आपके ब्लॉग के पाठकों) को नहीं पता!! तो अर्ज़ करते हैं:
- मुझे पढ़ने का शौक बचपन से है, लेकिन स्कूल की किताबें(अंग्रेज़ी और इतिहास की किताबों के अतिरिक्त), खासतौर से गणित और सामाजिक ज्ञान की किताबें, पढ़ने में मुझे कभी कोई रूचि नहीं रही!! 😉
- मेरी माताजी गणित की अध्यापिका रही हैं लेकिन मुझे गणित से शुरू से ही चिढ़ सी थी, यह आखिरी सब्जेक्ट होता था जिसे मैं तैयार करता था, लेकिन ठीक इसके विपरीत गणित संबन्धी पहेलियाँ सुलझाने में मुझे बड़ा मज़ा आता था। एक बार मेरी मौसी ने मुझे शकुन्तला देवी की गणित की पहेलियों की किताब लाकर दी तो स्कूल में भी मैं और मेरा एक मित्र इसमें लगे पड़े रहते थे और लगभग सारी पहेलियाँ सुलझा कर ही माने।
- सातवीं कक्षा में मुझे अंग्रेज़ी के हार्डी ब्वॉय्ज़ के उपन्यास पढ़ने का ऐसा चस्का लगा था कि कक्षा में अध्यापिका पढ़ा रही होती थी और मैं सबसे पीछे की सीट से थोड़ा आगे की सीट पर बैठा अपना सिर नीचे किए टेबल के नीचे उपन्यास पढ़ रहा होता था। उस दौरान मैं तकरीबन 2 उपन्यास प्रतिदिन की दर से समाप्त कर रहा था।
- मुझे स्पर्धा पसंद है। बहुत से काम मैंने प्रतिस्पर्धा के चलते किए हैं जिनको मैं अन्यथा कभी नहीं करता। यदि प्रतियोगिता का इनाम गुप्त हो या मेरे मन माफ़िक हो तो फ़िर मैं जीतने के लिए जी-जान लगा देता हूँ। इस से संबन्धित एक वाक्या मुझे कक्षा नौ से याद आता है।
हमारी विज्ञान की अध्यापिका छुट्टी पर थीं और सत्र समाप्त होने से पहले उनकी वापसी नहीं होनी थी। जो दूसरी अध्यापिका उनकी जगह आई थीं वह जीव-विज्ञान तो अच्छा पढ़ाती थीं लेकिन भौतिक विज्ञान तथा रसायन विज्ञान में हमें मज़ा नहीं आ रहा था(समझ लो) तो कक्षा के बहुत से विद्यार्थी प्रधानाचार्या के पास शिकायत लेकर गए, जब वे पढ़ाती थीं तो यही विषय पढ़ाती थीं। उन्होंने कक्षा में आकर हमसे कहा कि चूँकि वे हमें अधिक समय नहीं दे पाएँगी इसलिए हमको स्वयं बहुत मेहनत करनी होगी। पहले सबक के तौर पर उन्होंने कहा अगले दिन जो विद्युत-विज्ञान के पाठ के सबसे अधिक सवाल हल करके लाएगा उसको इनाम दिया जाएगा।
मैं मजे मजे में केवल 10-12 ही करके ले गया। अगले दिन आसपास पूछने पर पता चला कि एक लड़की 25 करके लाई थी, तो मैंने तुरंत और सवाल हल किए और 30 करके बैठ गया। फ़िर पता चला कि सबसे अधिक एक दूसरी लड़की ने किए हैं, पूरे 80!! यह जान मुझे और कुछ नहीं सूझा, किताब खोल बैठ गया। किताब के सभी सवाल हल करने के बाद भी गिनती 50 के आसपास थी। अभी दूसरी अध्यापिका के आने में समय था, उसके बाद खाने के लिए 20 मिनट की आधी छुट्टी होनी थी और फ़िर एक अन्य विषय की क्लॉस के बाद विज्ञान की क्लॉस थी। मैं पुस्तकालय की ओर लपक लिया, क्लॉस गोल की, लाईब्रेरियन मुझे जानती थी(सबसे अधिक किताबें मैं ही ले जाता था और उनके पुत्र का मित्र भी था) इसलिए कुछ कहा नहीं कुछ पूछा नहीं। वहाँ अपने कक्षा के अनुसार किताब निकाली और लग गया। पूरी किताब निपट गई लेकिन गिनती अभी 90 तक ही पहुँची थी(विद्युत विज्ञान संबन्धित अधिक सवाल नहीं थे, पुस्तकें पतली सी थीं)। तो मैंने दसवीं और ग्यारहवीं कक्षा के स्तर की पुस्तकें निकाली और शुरू हो गया। 100-105 पर पहुँच मैं चैन से बैठा, खाना खाने की आधी छुट्टी लगभग समाप्त हो गई थी, खाना नहीं खाया था लेकिन मन में संतोष था कि अब मैं सबसे आगे था।
लेकिन मैं कोई पंगा नहीं लेना चाहता था। इसलिए दोनों किताबें लेकर मैं वापस कक्षा में आ गया। किसी को नहीं बताया कि मैंने कितने प्रश्न हल कर लिए हैं। मैंने पुनः पूछताछ की, पता चला कि वही लड़की जो पहले 80 करके बैठी थी उसने भी अपनी संख्या बढ़ा के 125 कर लिए हैं, तो फ़िर क्या था, अध्यापिका पढ़ाती रही और मैं टेबल के नीचे किताब रख प्रश्न हल करता रहा। मैं अभी 130 तक पहुँच किताब बन्द करने ही वाला था कि पता चला कक्षा का एक हीरो 142 करके बैठा है और सबसे अधिक उसी के हैं। तो मन ही मन उसको ढेर सी गालियाँ देते हुए मैं ग्यारहवीं स्तर की पुस्तक से भिड़ गया और उसमें मौजूद आसान से समझ आने वाले प्रश्न करने लगा और 150 की गिनती होने पर अपनी पुस्तक बंद करके बैठ गया। किसी को नहीं बताया मैंने कितने किए हैं, सभी की निगाह में उस हीरो ने सबसे अधिक 142 किए थे और अब समय भी नहीं था, पाठ समाप्त होने वाला था और इसके बाद विज्ञान की क्लॉस थी। जब विज्ञान की अध्यापिका और फ़िर हमारी प्रधानाचार्या ने कक्षा में आकर सबसे पूछा कि किसने सबसे अधिक प्रश्न हल किए हैं तो सबने उस हीरो का नाम लिया और उसने शान से 142 प्रश्नों के हल वाली अपनी पुस्तिका पकड़ा दी। तभी मैं अपनी सीट से उठा और जाकर अध्यापिका को अपनी पुस्तिका पकड़ाई। उन्होंने पूछा कि मैंने कितने किए हैं तो “वन फ़िफ़्टी” कह मैंने उनको आखिरी पन्ना दिखाया। हीरो और उसकी मण्डली पास ही बैठे थे, सबके मुँह खुले के खुले रह गए।
प्रधानाचार्या ने मुझे उस समय बाज़ार में उपलब्ध सबसे बड़ी डेरी मिल्क चॉकलेट मुझे पुरस्कार स्वरूप दी और बाकी तीन लोगों को जिन्होंने सौ से अधिक प्रश्न किए थे उनको एक-एक छोटी अमूल की चॉकलेट दी। उस समय जितनी खुशी मुझे थी वह मैं बयान नहीं कर सकता था, आखिर मैंने हॉबी विषय के रूप में इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स जो लिया हुआ था, इसलिए मुझे तो प्रश्न हल करने में बहुत मज़ा आया था। यदि प्रधानाचार्या जी की निगाह आखिरी के 30-40 प्रश्नों पर जातीं तो मुझे विश्वास था कि उनको खुशी अवश्य होती क्योंकि मैंने अपनी कक्षा स्तर से दो वर्ष आगे के प्रश्न(बेशक पुस्तक में सबसे आसान वही थे) हल किए हुए थे। या शायद उनकी निगाह गई थी? मुझे पता नहीं लेकिन इतना अवश्य याद है कि दसवीं की बोर्ड की परीक्षा के बाद जब मैंने आर्ट्स ली थी और उसके बाद वाणिज्य में अपना स्थानांतरण करने के लिए उनसे कहा था तो उन्होंने मुझे विज्ञान लेने के लिए यह कहते हुए बहुत ज़ोर दिया था कि मेरे लिए विज्ञान ही सर्वोचित है लेकिन मेरी ज़िद वाणिज्य के लिए ही थी जो उन्होंने मुझे कदाचित् अनमने मन से दिया।
- मुझे अंधेरे से बहुत डर लगता था।

english translation for Ben & others who don’t understand hindi
Oh man, life was going pretty quiet(with few bumps here & there) when all of a sudden & unexpectedly came a tag from Ben. First I thought why would someone want to tag me, then I thought “cool eh, Ben has started writing again”, then I thought “ok, lets get it over with”!! 😉
Last time I was tagged, Alka did manage to put me in a rather tight spot, but its quite easy this time, all I’ve to do is just reveal 5 things about me which usually people don’t know(atleast the readers of this blog)!! Now that is indeed a bit difficult(I mean which things I can afford to reveal, eh!!), but here it goes!! 😉
- I’ve really liked reading a lot right from my childhood days, but never had any passion for my school books(except english literature & history books) especially social science books, eeek!! 😉
- Though my mom was a mathematics teacher, I’ve really disliked mathematics always. It used to the last subject that I used to prepare before exams, but on the contrary, I’ve always liked solving puzzles, especially maths puzzles. My aunt once got me a maths puzzle book written by Shakuntala Devi which me & one of my friends in school used to solve with lots of enthusiasm & almost solved the whole book.
- In the seventh grade, I got so addicted to Hardy Boys novels that I used to read them in school even when a class was in progress & the teacher was teaching, by sitting on a seat a bit before the last one in a row next to last(experience taught it that teachers’ eyes were mostly on last benches & last rows, so one easily got away with things when right under teachers’ nose, like the saying goes; if you wanna hide something, hide it in plain sight!)!! In those days, I was wrapping up at the rate of 2 novels per day!! 😉
- I like competition, there are a lot of things that I’ve done due to competition which I wouldn’t have done otherwise. If the prize is a surprise or something that I like, then I go with full steam to win!! There’s a memorable incident that I remember in this regard from the days of my 9th grade in school.
Our science teacher had gone on a long leave & her chances of coming back before the end of term were pretty slim. The teacher who had come as her replacement was good in biology but in physics & chemistry….. So one day some classmates decided that its about time they talk to the school principal about this since she used to teach physics in her teaching days. The principal said that since she won’t be able to take all classes in a week, we’ll have to work hard on our own as well. So to start things off, she said that we were to solve as many electronics numericals as we can & the student having solved maximum numericals next day would get a prize.
I didn’t take it seriously at all & arrived at school next day with just 10-12 numericals. On asking around, I got to know that a girl has done 25 numericals, so I decided to oust her & reached the count of 30. Then I got the intel that another girl has done more than anyone else, a total of 80 numericals!! Now that was astounding, so I opened my book & started finishing off numericals like a machine & was soon done with all in the book, but the score was still around 50!! Next class was about to start & then we were to have a 20 minute recess & then another class before science class. So I bunked the class & rushed to the library; the librarian knew me(I was the one who used to take away more books than anyone else & anyways, I & her son were friends) so she didn’t ask me any uneasy questions like why was I not in class!! In the physics section I got a book as per my grade & started with it. But even after finishing off with that book I was still around 90(since the electronics chapter was a bit short & not many numericals in there). So I pulled out another couple of books which were of 10th & 11th grade & started with the easy questions in them. Having reached 100-105 I breathed a sigh of relief, recess was almost over, but I had this satisfaction of being in the lead!!
Still not wanting to take any chance, I took the books along with me & reached my classroom. I didn’t let out how many I’ve done, but got to know that the same girl who had done 80 earlier was sitting tight on 125, so I started again, didn’t want to loose having come all this way. So book under the table, I went off again & was just about to close my notebook with 130 numericals, I came to know about a guy who’d done the most, 142. So after cursing him in my thoughts, I was at it again & finally closed my notebook at 150. I didn’t tell anyone how many I’d done(I guess no one was expecting much either) & everyone had accepted that that guy was gonna win with his 142 numericals, there was no time to do any more as well. On time, the bio teacher & the principal entered the classroom & asked who had done the most number of numericals. Everyone looked at that guy as he gave his notebook with 142 numericals to the bio teacher. After that I got up & handed her mine. She asked me how many I’d done & the answer came crisply from me, “one fifty”. That guy & his gang were seated near the place where I was standing & their jaws dropped right to the floor!! 😉
The principal, as the prize, gave me the biggest Dairy Milk chocolate bar available in the market at that time & as a consolation prize gave an Amul chocolate bar to each of the 3 people who’d done more than 100 numericals. I was damn happy at that time, since I’d taken Electronics as my hobby subject I’d enjoyed solving all the numericals!! But I wondered, had the principal seen the last 30-40 numericals, perhaps she’d been more pleased with me since they were of a level 2 years above me(even though they were the easy ones in the book)!! I don’t know whether she saw that or not but I know this, when after the board exams of 10th, when after having taken Arts in 11th I went to her to get her to transfer me to Commerce, she’d asked me why I hadn’t taken Science as according to her that was where I should’ve gone, but I insisted on taking Commerce which I think she reluctantly gave to me.
- I used to fear the dark!! 😉
Now its time I pick my victims(about whom I want to know) for this thing so that the chain continues. So here’s my hitlist:
